KIT Industry Experts: The valuable view from outside

With the KIT Industry Experts, an expert network was created in 2018 to support knowledge and technology transfer at KIT. How scientific employees of KIT can benefit from the network of voluntary industry experts, you can find out here in a nutshell.

Knowledge and technology transfer thrives on the involvement of everyone – researchers, transfer offices, and future-oriented commercial enterprises. With the KIT Industry Experts, exactly these multipliers find each other on a personal level. The network of voluntary members, who are KIT alumni and work in various business sectors, was initiated in 2018 by the Innovation and Relations Management (IRM) service unit and now gathers a concentrated industry expertise of more than 170 members.

While member recruitment was essential in the beginning, its focus has long been on making the network come alive: Establishing connections between industry experts and KIT scientific employees and promoting personal exchange. With the support of Community Manager Laura Bosch, who has built up the network from the beginning and maintains it, industry knowledge, know-how, and entrepreneurial experience of the KIT Industry Experts can thus be incorporated into one's own research on the "small official channel". The "Experts" contribute their entrepreneurial experience out of conviction for the cause and represent the industrial perspective in emerging questions on new developments and technical solutions from KIT.

The network offers various opportunities for involvement and participation for KIT researchers. Always with the aim of enabling direct dialog with experts from industry and thus stimulating the transfer of knowledge and technology – whether it is expert advice, a conversation for orientation or also for understanding about the needs of industry, as well as bringing together long-term tandems from science and industry.

Online surveys: Within the scope of a special survey among KIT Industry Experts, you can present your research idea or technology. Depending on your needs, individual areas can be specifically inquired. Based on the survey results, you will receive valuable feedback from industry experts on your technology and an assessment regarding the application, further development, and marketability of your development.

Expert advice: Under the motto "One question - one conversation", you can easily obtain expertise from the network on specific questions – by phone, virtually or in person. Based on the members' industry knowledge, you receive a trustworthy review and feedback on your specific question. This objective view from the outside can be helpful, for example, when making strategic decisions in a technology project.

Accompaniment by experts: The dedicated KIT Industry Experts are also available to support you in the long term in your project. Involve the experts for a defined period of time and benefit from their industry expertise, whether in development projects, in the preparation of funding applications, or in start-up projects. In order to find the right companion, you will be supported in the matching process.

The members of KIT Industry Experts are always pleased to contribute themselves and their know-how at KIT, such as KIT Industry Expert Klaus Brossok, who was a speaker at the Karlsruhe Service Research Institute (KSRI). (Image: Fabian Brossok)

KIT Industry Experts as speakers: The network combines know-how from different industries, which the members are pleased to share with interested parties. Use the opportunity for your institute to integrate the practical experts as speakers in event formats. The possibilities are very diverse: The network members participate, for example, in lectures, workshops and discussion rounds as speakers or discussion partners.

How could the experts (still) help you?

The offerings presented are a beginning and have so far established themselves in everyday networking. However, if you have further ideas on how you would like to cooperate with the experts from industry, we look forward to a creative exchange with you. Only if we get to know the needs of the scientific employees at KIT better, we will be able to launch the appropriate formats. The network is available for you! Feel free to contact Laura Bosch – she will support you in selecting the activity, matching, and initiating contact with the experts.
