Rarity with rollers – The 4WD-Acoustic-Chassis-Dynamometer

The world's only 4WD-Acoustic-Chassis-Dynamometer of this dimension relocates the road to the KIT laboratory and scores with precision and flexibility.

Modern vehicles contain increasingly complex systems that need to be tested under realistic conditions before being launched on the market. Roller dynamometer are crucial for enabling reproducible test scenarios for cars, trucks and mobile working machines, e.g. for the construction industry, agriculture or the logistics sector.

State of the art

Such test benches are particularly rare for mobile machines due to their high demands on performance and flexibility. The ideal test infrastructure should be able to simulate high forces, additional drives such as PTO shafts or hydraulic systems as well as heavy loads. The development of such systems is technically demanding and cost-intensive, as they have to be individually adapted to vehicle sizes and functions.

Technology

The Mobile Machines Devision (Mobima) at the Institute of Vehicle Systems Technology (FAST) has a globally unique 4WD-Acoustic-Chassis-Dynamometer that covers a wide range of vehicle models and test scenarios. The test bench enables comprehensive vehicle testing for all-wheel drive vehicles of up to 40 tons, which can be individually tailored to specific problems. Precise noise measurements are possible in the special acoustics hall. Four independently controllable rollers, each driven by an externally excited synchronous motor, simulate realistic road conditions, inclines and uneven loads, among other things. Other features such as solar simulation and air conditioning enable comprehensive test cycles, while a driving robot ensures reproducible test conditions.

Advantages

The dynamometer can be flexibly adapted to the requirements of different vehicle sizes and enables detailed analyses using attachments and measuring instruments. Acoustic lining and air conditioning ensure a constant, weather-independent test environment and predictability. Using the 4WD-Acoustic-Chassis-Dynamometer reduces time and costs, as there is no need to set up your own test bench. Users benefit from quick tests, short waiting times and agile collaboration, which accelerates the development of innovative vehicle solutions.

Options for companies

KIT rents out the roller dynamometer to industrial and research partners as a test platform and provides support with consulting services if required. In addition, cooperation in research and development projects is possible on the basis of public funding and third-party funding.
