Vehicle-in-the-Loop

Increasing complexity of modern vehicle structures results in increasing requirements on the complexity of development and validation environments. This particularly applies to cases in which the interaction of  vehicle, driver, and the environment has to be considered. The vehicle-in-the-loop development environment combines the advantages of roller dynamometers in terms of reproducible environmental conditions with hardware-in-the-loop methods. One of the tools of vehicle-in-the-loop is a driving simulator to test innovative low-energy driver assistance systems. On a simulated road section, a real driver tests aspects like the use of an active pedal, influences acting on him, and acceptance of the vehicle-in-the-loop system. Apart from driver assistance systems, also emissions, consumption, and the driving behavior of vehicles can be simulated closely to reality. The vehicle-in-the-loop test rig is accommodated in an acoustic hall in order to test extraordinary states of operation with a real or simulated driver, with and without simulated road topologies and traffic. It is possible to test entire vehicles as well as control devices and drive chains that are controlled by the driving simulator. It is also possible to additionally simulate the remaining vehicle. Networking of conceptual developments in simulated environments and tests of real mechanical components generate reproducible, comparable test cases that are made available for analysis via an open data interface.
